First phase of Chabahar port opens, to boost trade between India and Iran

  • The first phase of the Chabahar port was inaugurated  by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, opening up a new strategic transit route between Iran, India and Afghanistan, bypassing Pakistan.
  • The port in the Sistan-Balochistan province on the energy-rich nation’s southern coast lies outside the Persian Gulf and is easily accessed from India’s western coast and is considered as a “gateway to golden opportunities” for trade with central Asian countries.

Nation remembers India's first President on his birthday

  • Remembered India's first President Rajendra Prasad on his 133rd birthday. 
  • Born on December 3, 1884, in Siwan, Bihar, Prasad was a Gandhian and participated in India's freedom movement.

International Day of Persons with Disabilities 3rd Dec

  • It aims to promote the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities in all spheres of society and development, and to increase awareness of the situation of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life.

Infosys appoints Salil S. Parekh as CEO and Managing Director


  • Infosys annouced the appointment of Salil S. Parekh as its new CEO and Managing Director. Salil was in Capegemini earlier.
  • Parekh, who will take over on January 2, 2018 for a period of five years, was a member of the Group Executive Board at French firm Capgemini

  • Former journalist and author A. Surya Prakash has been appointed as the chairman of the public broadcaster Prasar Bharati for a second term. Prasar Bharati runs Doordarshan and All India Radio.
  • A. Surya Prakash’s reappointment, till February 2020 , comes at a time when Prasar Bharati is undergoing a revamp in a bid to revive its finances and viewership.

‘Populism’ is Cambridge dictionary’s ‘word of the year’

Evidence from the Cambridge English Corpus – a 1.5-billion-word database of language – reveals that people tend to use the term populism when they think it is a political ploy instead of genuine.
  • The word “populism” has been announced as the Cambridge Dictionary 2017 Word of the Year .
  • The dictionary defines populism as “political ideas and activities that are intended to get the support of ordinary people by giving them what they want”.
